I like this trend of rappers releasing killer material for free. For every commercially released rap album this year, there's another free album released as a "mixtape" that's just as good if not better. I put mixtape in quotes because in the past, a mixtape meant annoying DJ drops, unlicensed beats stolen from lots of different sources, and generally just sub-par material and no continuity. No more. The current trend is taking a fully formed album with none of these problems and releasing it for free. I don't know how rap fans got so lucky. I actually feel bad about it sometimes -- at least set up a PayPal account or something.
Anyway, that's what we have here with XXX -- a free album that'll make you feel like you should kick in a few bucks. The first thing you'll notice is that this guy has a weird voice. He's got a weird haircut too. It's not a put-on...he's just a weird dude. He's not gimmicky, he's just really honest. He talks a lot about his drug addictions, especially to Adderall. He's a great rapper -- he's got clever rhymes and can switch up his flow so much it sounds like a guest spot. He's also got some great beats here that occasionally sound like something MF DOOM would do. It's a testament to Danny Brown's skill that he can primarily rap about tired subjects like drugs, sex, and street life and make it sound fresh. Dude's funny too. Check it.
