video: Ty Segall - The Hill

Let's see if Segall can go 3 for 3 in 2012. Twins is out October 9th, and don't forget that Ty is currently on tour with Thee Oh Sees (their own Brigid Dawson is featured on "The Hill").

album preview: Ty Segall Band - Slaughterhouse

A quick rundown to explain all the Ty Segall releases coming this year: He already recorded and released an album at the end of April with White Fence, called Hair. On June 26th he'll be releasing an album called Slaughterhouse with his touring band under the moniker Ty Segall Band. And later this year he'll be releasing a regular ol' solo Ty Segall album.

The Ty Segall Band consists of Ty Segall (vocals, guitar), Mikal Cronin (bass), Charlie Moothart (guitar), and Emily Rose Epstein (drums). He's been playing three Slaughterhouse tracks on his recent run of shows: "Wave Goodbye," "I Bought My Eyes," and "Oh Mary" (the latter of which was previously released on a Ty Segall solo album). Listen to those songs below.

*Not the Slaughterhouse version*

Slaughterhouse:
01 Death
02 I Bought My Eyes
03 Slaughterhouse
04 The Tongue
05 Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart
06 Wave Goodbye
07 Muscle Man
08 That's the Bag I'm In
09 Diddy Wah Diddy
10 Oh Mary
11 Fuzz War

Slaughterhouse is out June 26th on my favorite record label, In The Red. It comes on two clear 10" records in a double gatefold with the wicked cover art above, if you get it early.

album stream: Marty Marquis - Switched-On Goodbye Bread

In the spirit of Wendy Carlos' all synthesizer interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach,Switched-On Bach, Blitzen Trapper's Marty Marquis has done the same thing with Ty Segall's Goodbye Bread. Why? Because listening to non-synthesizer music performed on synthesizers is a fun novelty, I guess.

track: Ty Segall + White Fence - I Am Not a Game

San Francisco garage rockers Ty Segall and White Fence are teaming up for an album and a tour, and now we have a little taste of the former. Here's a little '60s garage rock nugget, "I Am Not a Game". The album, Hair, is out April 24th on on Drag City. They're playing the Star Theater in Portland May 5th, and The End in Nashville May 21st. I'll be making the 3 hour drive.

feature: Album Covers So Bad They're Good

Mastodon just released the cover for their upcoming album, The Hunter. I really love it, but I've got a feeling that I might have a thing for bad album covers. What do you think of these? What are your favorite bad album covers?

mini reviews: Thee Oh Sees, Black Lips, Ty Segall

2011 has been a great year for garage rock so far. Here are 3 of my favorite garage rock records from this year, all of which are strong contenders for my AOTY at this point.

Thee Oh Sees - Castlemania

Imagine if Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem dosed the inhabitants of Sesame Street, unbeknownst to them. The band would be playing, half the street would be in flames, Kermit would be running around like an idiot with his arms flailing over his head, Animal would be clanging on bells, and random Muppets would be singing, oblivious to the carnage around them. That's what this album sounds like. Basically, it sounds like its amazing album cover.

favorite songs: I Need Seed, Corprophagist (A Bath Perhaps), AA Warm Breeze
listen if you like: woodwinds, clanging bells, bleeps and bloops, monster vocals

Black Lips - Arabia Mountain

200 Million Thousand was taking mushrooms and drinking whiskey in a dank basement that smells like cat piss. Arabia Mountain is doing acid and drinking beers in a sunny park with your friends. When I talked to the band 2 years ago at a Scion Garage Fest, they said the record was going to be out early last year. It was worth the wait; this is easily the best record the Black Lips have made to date.

favorite songs: Modern Art, Family Tree, Mad Dog
listen if you like: sunny parks, mischief, mixing lots of drugs 'til you're confused

Ty Segall - Goodbye Bread

This is a lot calmer affair than Ty's past work; essentially it's a garage singer-songwriter record. Usually, nothing sends me running to the hills faster than the tag "singer-songwriter," but this kid has got talent. Check out his 2011 EP of T-Rex covers, Ty Rex, and his 2010 LP, Melted, as well. You won't be disappointed.

favorite songs: Goodbye Bread, You Make the Sun Fry, My Head Explodes
listen if you like: guitar, melancholy with your fun, fuzz
