video: Ty Segall - The Hill

Let's see if Segall can go 3 for 3 in 2012. Twins is out October 9th, and don't forget that Ty is currently on tour with Thee Oh Sees (their own Brigid Dawson is featured on "The Hill").

Sunday, September 9, 2012

track: Kanye West feat. Big Sean + Jay-Z - Clique

Check out a new song over at Kanye's website called "Clique". It features Yeezy, Jay-Z, and Big Sean or 2 Chainz or someone who gives a shit
It's produced by Hit-Boy of course. Shit's hot of course.

track: Jean Grae - Kill Screen

I think we were supposed to get a Jean Grae album before the end of 2011, but I still ain't seen it. But this Donkey Kong-inspired song is pretty rad. It's off something called Gotham Down, which is supposed to come before the 2011-promised Cake or Death. Keep your fingers crossed.

video: A$AP Mob feat. Flatbush Zombies - Bath Salt

Download A$AP Mob's (that's A$AP Rocky's crew) Lord$ Never Worry mixtape. It features production from AraabMuzik and Clams Casino, and guest spots from Raekwon, Danny Brown, and more.

While you're at it, check out the mixtape from Flatbush Zombies, D.R.U.G.S. It's backed by hallucinogenic, psychedelic beats.

A$AP Rocky's LongLiveA$AP is out on Halloween.

feature: Favorite Albums of the First Half of 2012

2012 started off a bit slow, but it's been picking up. August and September are going to make the year. Here's 25 albums that I've been loving so far, no particular order, with links to listen when possible. There's indie rock, rap, garage rock, electronic, synthpop, folk, psych rock....a little something for everybody.

Row 1: Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan; Ty Segall/White Fence - Hair; Ty Segall Band - Slaughterhouse; El-P - Cancer4Cure; King Tuff - King Tuff
Row 2: Death Grips - The Money Store; Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music; Schoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions; Lil B - God's Father; Bear in Heaven - I Love You, It's Cool
Row 3: The Flaming Lips - The Flaming Lips & Heady Fwends; Beach House - Bloom; Grimes - Visions; Father John Misty - Fear Fun; Conveyor - Conveyor

track: Big Boi feat. Big K.R.I.T. + UGK - Gossip

Big Boi is still at it. Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors sounds like it will be as great as Sir Lucious Left Foot.

video: Maybach Music Group feat. Kendrick Lamar - Power Circle

I love a good triumphant rap track. Here's a 9-minute posse cut from Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group's new compilation album.

video: Aesop Rock - ZZZ Top

It's hard to tell if the song is any good, but the video sure is entertaining.

video/track: Lana Del Rey + A$AP Rocky - National Anthem + My Bitch

There's a lot of hate for LDR's lips out there, and their seeming inability to distinguish between Jackie O and Marilyn Monroe, but I like hearing them on rap tracks. I'm not usually one for female pop star hooks in rap, but I don't mind these songs at all. Hear another one here, where A$AP Rocky actually raps.

track: Thee Oh Sees - Lupine Dominus

September is going to be an incredible month for me music-wise, with most of my favorite bands putting out new records around then: Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, A$AP Rocky, and of course Thee Oh Sees.

video: King Khan & the Shrines - Bite My Tongue

King Khan is back with this excellent new song and video. Yay!

Sunday, June 24, 2012

album stream: YAWN - Happy Tears

Check this EP (and their other stuff) out if you dig electronic pop in the vein of Starfucker or Animal Collective.

track: Chelsea Light Moving - Burroughs

It's still not clear if Sonic Youth has broken up after Thurston and Kim's divorce, but now Thurston has another band named Chelsea Light Moving. They sound like Sonic Youth.

Hear a new song here.

Monday, June 18, 2012

track: Unknown Mortal Orchestra - I'll Come Back 4 U

Adult Swim's 3rd annual Single Series is back, and the lead-off track is from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The dudes over at [as] have the best taste. They'll be coming with 12 tracks over the next 12 weeks. Check it, download it.

album stream: Ty Segall Band - Slaughterhouse

Slaughterhouse is now streaming over at Spin. Buy it at In The Red. More info here.

video: Killer Mike feat. Bun B, T.I. - Big Beast

There's entrails, nudity, car chases, all kinds of good stuff in here. Get on this album now.

video: Beach House - Lazuli

track: Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Baby

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti are set to release their new album, Mature Themes, August 21st on 4AD. The first single, "Baby", is a soul cover of Donnie and Joe Emerson's "Baby," and also features guest vocals from Dâm-Funk, who is opening some tour dates. Ariel has said that Mature Themes will be similar to Before Today sonically, but more diverse.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

video: Danny Brown - Grown Up

track: Grizzly Bear - Sleeping Ute

Grizzly Bear released a new track yesterday. You probably didn't hear about it. The album's out on Warp on September 18th. There's a tracklist and tour schedule here, but no album title yet. I'll bet your favorite rappers and comedians are excited.

album stream: SpaceGhostPurrp - Mysterious Phonk

SpaceGhostPurrp has made a name for himself doing throwback dark early 90s rap in the vein of Three 6 Mafia on amateurish yet captivating tapes like Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6 (1991) and the GXX XX BXXXK EP. Now, inexplicably, he's releasing his debut LP, a collection of (slightly) cleaned up older tracks, on 4AD. Stream it above.

Monday, June 4, 2012

free album: Clams Casino - Instrumental Mixtape 2

The best producer in the game right now is back with a second collection of beats. There's a lot of A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, Lil B, Washed Out, Mac Miller, Lana Del Rey, and more. You're gonna want to get this.

track: Ab-Soul - Mixed Emotions

Good ol' lean-sippin' music. This track is slaying me right now. Can't get enough of it.

album stream: Hot Chip - In Our Heads

Stream Hot Chip's new LP, In Our Heads, over at NPR now.

video: A$AP Rocky feat. Schoolboy Q - Brand New Guy

Download LiveLoveA$AP for free here. The follow-up, LongLiveA$AP, is coming July 4th.

02 True Thrush

video: King Tuff - Bad Thing

album preview: Ty Segall Band - Slaughterhouse

A quick rundown to explain all the Ty Segall releases coming this year: He already recorded and released an album at the end of April with White Fence, called Hair. On June 26th he'll be releasing an album called Slaughterhouse with his touring band under the moniker Ty Segall Band. And later this year he'll be releasing a regular ol' solo Ty Segall album.

The Ty Segall Band consists of Ty Segall (vocals, guitar), Mikal Cronin (bass), Charlie Moothart (guitar), and Emily Rose Epstein (drums). He's been playing three Slaughterhouse tracks on his recent run of shows: "Wave Goodbye," "I Bought My Eyes," and "Oh Mary" (the latter of which was previously released on a Ty Segall solo album). Listen to those songs below.

*Not the Slaughterhouse version*

Slaughterhouse:
01 Death
02 I Bought My Eyes
03 Slaughterhouse
04 The Tongue
05 Tell Me What's Inside Your Heart
06 Wave Goodbye
07 Muscle Man
08 That's the Bag I'm In
09 Diddy Wah Diddy
10 Oh Mary
11 Fuzz War

Slaughterhouse is out June 26th on my favorite record label, In The Red. It comes on two clear 10" records in a double gatefold with the wicked cover art above, if you get it early.

album stream: Liars - WIXIW

If you would have told me a month ago that the new Liars album would be mostly electronic and sound a bit like Radiohead, I would have never believed you. But here we are. Stream the album over at NPR. It's out June 5th on Mute.

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

album stream: King Tuff - King Tuff

Some good summer jams.

album stream: Marty Marquis - Switched-On Goodbye Bread

In the spirit of Wendy Carlos' all synthesizer interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach,Switched-On Bach, Blitzen Trapper's Marty Marquis has done the same thing with Ty Segall's Goodbye Bread. Why? Because listening to non-synthesizer music performed on synthesizers is a fun novelty, I guess.

video: Hot Chip - Night & Day

video: Ab-Soul - Terrorist Threats

album stream: El-P - Cancer 4 Cure

Stream Cancer 4 Cure over at Rolling Stone. Highly recommended.

album stream: Beach House - Bloom

It's been floating around the internet for a while, but now you can listen to it legally. It might just be the best thing Beach House has done. Give it a listen over at NPR.

album stream: Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music

Killer Mike's El-P produced R.A.P. Music is now streaming over at SPIN. You're going to want to give this a listen.

Sunday, May 6, 2012

video: A$AP Rocky - Goldie

"Goldie" is the first single from Rocky's follow-up to LiveLoveA$AP, titled LongLiveA$AP. It's due out July 4th on RCA.

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

video: Ab-Soul - Pineal Gland

Ab-Soul drops another track, with a video this time. We've got the album title and release date now too: Control System, out May 11th.

track: Hot Chip - Night and Day

Another low-quality rip of a song off the upcoming Hot Chip album, In Our Heads, called "Night and Day". In Our Heads is out June 12th on Domino.

album stream: Suckers - Candy Salad

Video Platform Video Management Video Solutions Video Player {SEO}

You can't find much press on Suckers. After a very strong EP and LP (self-titled and Wild Smile, respectively), people took notice of the band. But after the obligatory "Brooklyn-based," details get scarce real quick. Some might mention that they have a pretty solid live show. Some might pull out the name of their vocalist, Quinn Walker. But how many have listened to his fever dream double album, Laughter's an Asshole/Lion Land? What about the albums he put out for ten years before that?

Until Suckers, Quinn Walker was a bedroom project in the vein of Ariel Pink or R. Stevie Moore, making album after album of similarly warped music (with more of a freak folk lean), burning it on CD-Rs, and mailing it out to fans who wrote him. You can't find these albums on RateYourMusic or What.cd, and you can't find his stuff on Youtube (beware of that other Quinn Walker who had a song on Scrubs). I've got a stack of these discs, and while most of them aren't worth searching out, they do give you an idea of where Suckers is coming from. Any fan of Suckers should at least check out Laughter's an Asshole/Lion Land. I'm sure the band will continue to move away from their roots towards a poppier, more accessible sound, as they've done on Candy Salad. And they'll no doubt find more success in that. But Suckers will always be that weirdo on Music That Fears for It's Life and This Umbrella Doesn't Work and People Are Full of Blood to me.

Candy Salad is out April 24th on Frenchkiss Records.

video: Pond - You Broke My Cool

Pond is the psych-rock side project of several Tame Impala members. The album is produced by Dave Fridmann, who is, in my opinion, one of the most recognizable producers. He's done stuff by MGMT, the Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and you can instantly hear that it's the same producer on this album. If those connections sound like a good thing to you, and you enjoy some throwback psych-rock, then check out this excellent Pond album, Beard, Wives, Denim.

live: Hologram Tupac at Coachella

Take a trip into Uncanny Valley with Hologram Tupac. And follow @HoloPac on Twitter while you're at it.

"2pac" did "Hail Mary" and "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted". The guest-heavy party of a set from Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg also featured "Nate Dogg", 50 Cent, Eminem, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Warren G, and more. They covered "Jump Around" and "In the Air Tonight", along with tons of hits from everyone involved. There really wasn't a lowspot, except for Wiz Khalifa's song, which made me feel bad. I hate that Bride of Frankenstein-lookin' mother.... Watch most of the full set here.

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

track: Black Lips - Dance with You

The b-side to their "Sick of You" single, both of which are outtakes from Arabia Mountain. It's lo-fi and ends with a psychedelic shitstorm.

Monday, April 9, 2012

live video: Ty Segall + White Fence - Scissor People

Yea this is gonna be good. Hair is out on Drag City April 24th. Check the tour dates after the jump.

Saturday, April 7, 2012

tracks: Kanye West - Mercy feat. Big Sean, Pusha T, 2 Chainz + Theraflu feat. DJ Khaled

Kanye released a pair of tracks this week, one of which has already pissed off both PETA and the Theraflu company. Fuck 'em, G.O.O.D. Friday's are back!

"Mercy" features G.O.O.D. Music labelmates Big Sean and Pusha T - as well as 2 Chainz, a guy Kanye has been pushing pretty hard. It's produced by Hit-Boy, who also did "Theraflu" and "Niggas in Paris".

"Theraflu", on the other hand, features DJ Khaled hollering over the track like a dumbass like he does. It's no "DAMN SON, where'd you find this?!" Kanye's also bragging about ridiculous shit on this one, so if that turns you off then steer clear.

track: Ab-Soul feat. Danny Brown + Jhene Aiko - Terrorist Threats

Ab-Soul has been, thus far, the quietest member of the Black Hippy crew - which also includes Schoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay Rock. So far, Schoolboy and Kendrick Lamar have put out two of my favorite rap albums of 2012 and 2011, respectively. We don't have a title or date for Ab-Soul's album yet, but this track has just raised my anticipation level.

video: Jack White - Sixteen Saltines

Jack White's long-awaited solo album, Blunderbuss, is out April 24th. The video for "Sixteen Saltines" has a bunch of ragamuffins acting like hooligans. It's a lot of fun.
