Boris has already released two excellent albums in 2011 -- the Merzbow collaboration, 'Klatter', and the J-Pop Japanese-only album 'New Album', which contains re-worked versions of songs from TWO OTHER albums that Boris are going to release in the first half of 2011. One of these albums, whose release date has been pushed back to May 24 due to the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown/volcano/end of the world, is called 'Heavy Rocks'. The only thing is, Boris has already released an album called 'Heavy Rocks'. This is an entirely different album, with the same cover (only in purple instead of orange), and it was also named 'Heavy Rocks' because Boris felt that this collection of songs was heavy enough to warrant bearing the 'Heavy Rocks' name.
Boris can be really confusing sometimes.
Anyway, the lead track from 'Heavy Rocks' has been released. Just listen to it, and quit trying to figure Boris out.
Animal Collective recently teamed up with eco-friendly shoe company Keep to both design their own shoes and record a mixtape. Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Geologist, and Deakin all turned in one shoe and one track. Listen to those below (the tracks not the shoes).
The Flaming Lips teamed up with Neon Indian for this 12" -- only 1000 copies on colored vinyl, no two alike, hand-delivered by Wayne Coyne himself to two record stores in OKC and Houston. They sold out almost immediately, but you can hear the record here. Highly recommended.
The Flaming Lips with Neon Indian: 01 “Is David Bowie Dying?” 02 “Alan’s Theremin” 03 “You Don’t Respond” 04 “Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth Part II”
“Is David Bowie Dying?”
“Alan’s Theremin,” “You Don’t Respond” and “Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Truth Part II”
Head over to The Strokes' website to listen to their new album, Angles. I think it's easily the best thing they've done since Is This It, though that seems to be an unpopular opinion. I was fully expecting to hate this album, but it's one of my favorites so far from 2011.
By the way, new albums are coming out in the next 2 months from all of these guys: Man Man, Battles, Boris, Bootsy Collins, Beastie Boys, Fleet Foxes, The Black Lips, Tyler the Creator, and Panda Bear. So uh....that's gonna be awesome.
Pitchfork was really late hopping on the OFWGKTA bandwagon, but they sure are trying to own them now. Odd Future has a spot at this year's Pitchfork Fest, and P4K just wrote a pretty good guide to their albums if you're wanting to get into them. Check that out here.
You can download their albums at OFWGKTA's Tumblr, and at Datpiff if some of those links are broken.
Man Man have released the first single to their upcoming album, Life Fantastic. The album opener is called "Knuckle Down", the album is out May 10, and that's the cover.
Life Fantastic: 01 Knuckle Down 02 Piranhas Club 03 Steak Knives 04 Dark Arts 05 Haute Tropique 06 Shameless 07 Spooky Jookie 08 Eel Bros 09 Bangkok Necktie 10 Life Fantastic 11 Oh, La Brea
Man Man will be in Portland May 18th at the Wonder Ballroom. Don't miss it, they put on a crazy show.
Check out some songs from these upcoming shows in Portland. Then maybe buy a ticket. They all cost less than $15, so why not?
Warpaint // A killer female quartet that makes gorgeous psychedelic rock. They're even better live than they are on record. I was transfixed at their show at the Holocene a few months ago, and I can't wait to see them again. Don't miss it. Warpaint - Billie Holiday
Destroyer // One of many bands of the prolific Dan Bejar (see also: The New Pornographers, Swan Lake). Their 9th album, Kaputt, is one of 2011's best releases so far. This show should be a good one -- Kurt Vile's band, The War on Drugs, is opening. I listen to Kurt Vile's solo project a lot more than The War on Drugs (Kurt Vile's 'Smoke Rings for My Halo' is another early AOTY contender), but I can't see them disappointing. Destroyer - Chinatown
Toro y Moi // On Toro y Moi's second record, they shed the chillwave production and do disco instead. See the MJ-esque "New Beat" for proof. Another excellent 2011 release. Toro y Moi - New Beat
SALEM // Alright, to be honest, this show might be straight up awful. No, not might be, it's going to be. But I want to be their to see the shitshow. Check out this infamous video from SXSW, where SALEM let everyone know that their 'Yes I Smoke Crack' EP wasn't just a clever title. Damn that's embarrassing. SALEM - King Night
(To be fair, their sound was messed up and it doesn't work without the effects. At all. 'King Night' was actually a pretty good album.)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra // Next to nothing is known about them, except that they're from Portland, they made their live debut just a few days ago, and this song is pretty damn good. The rest of their EP sounds like early Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, and you can't go wrong with that as far as I'm concerned. They're opening for Starfucker, and the show's only $5. I wouldn't miss it. Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Ffunny Ffriends
Check the right bar for more info on these shows. Go the venue's homepage to look up prices and buy tickets. If you're short on cash, it's cheaper to buy from the venue's box office or Jackpot Records.
Puro Instinct is the hazy dream-pop project of sisters Piper (vocals) and Skylar (guitar). I saw them open for Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti last year, and have had the songs stuck in my head ever since. Which is pretty amazing considering they only started playing in 2008, when Skylar was just 14 years old. Get the album, Headbangers In Ecstasy. It's the best thing I've heard so far in 2011.
Gang Gang Dance revealed the first song from their upcoming album, Eye Contact (out May 9th). It's less a single, and more an 11-minute opus. It's also psychedelic, tribal, and dancey (so, a GGD song). Check them out if you get a chance to see them, their live show is a lot of fun.
Here's a song from their excellent 2008 album, Saint Dymphna.
I went out to karaoke last night. I didn't get drunk enough to do any songs (karaoke on a Wednesday night is filled with professionals who are paying attention to you) but these are some songs that I was strongly considering doing, if I would have gotten enough liquid courage in me.
Raekwon's been on a hot streak lately. 2009's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx pt. 2 was great, and his new album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, is almost as good. Here's the very cool video for the title track. For fans of the Wu, comic books, and Kung Fu movies.
The new video for Lil Wayne's '6 Foot 7 Foot', directed by Hype Williams. This is the same guy who cleverly jam-packed Kanye's 'Flashing Lights' video with enough flashing lights to piss off Epilepsy Action.
Here, he just turns everything Lil Wayne says into a visual and calls it a video. Luckily Lil Wayne says some weird shit. Also, something about Inception. Just because.
This song should be enough to get you hyped for the upcoming Carter IV. Weezy's back.
This site is a place to collect the things that I care about in the music world: my favorite new releases, music videos, news, and upcoming concerts. I already waste enough time reading about, collecting, and listening to music, so I don't plan on writing long, eloquent blurbs to go with the posts -- just enough background info to give the musicians their due. I just like to share music with friends, so I'm embedding a music player....Hopefully you'll hit play and hear some tunes that you dig as you go about your day. Basically this site is to keep all of my crazy contained in one place, instead of it being all over Twitter, Facebook, and everywhere else.
